This is another country popular with Brits due to the great climate, low cost of living, affordable housing, relaxed lifestyle, great beaches and, of course, superb golf courses. About 20,000 Brits live in Portugal with the Algarve, Silver Coast and Madeira being the most popular destinations.
Property prices tend to be quite competitive when compared to Spain and have started to show modest shoots of recovery since 2014 following the long recession. There is still good value to be had in Portugal despite the recent drop in Sterling.
Whilst Portugal is close to the UK with the same timezone, there are only three mainland international airports with Lisbon serving the central area, Faro the south and Porto covering the north.
So, we start our tour of Portugal in the south and The Algarve.
This area has been a hot tourist and property destination for some years with a range of properties to suit all budgets and tastes.
East of Faro airport towards the Spanish border is less developed but offer a more authentic Portugal rich in history and culture. Prices are also affordable and popular options include the lovely town of Tavira, the family friendly resort of Altura with its fantastic golden sandy beaches near Monte Gordo. This stretch of the Algarve hosts an unspoilt coastline with small offshore islands.
Just west of Faro airport, we arrive at the central sweep of the Algarve from Quinta do Lago to Portimão. This area is by far the most popular with superb tourist facilities, golf courses and beaches. Again, there is easy access to Faro airport. Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura tend to represent the more premium and fashionable destinations.
More affordable areas include Vale do Lobo, Quarteira, Carvoeiro, St Barbara de Nexe and Albufeira. Inland from Quarteira is the quaint hillside town of Loulé and the Goldra area.
There are some beautiful areas around Portimão with the traditional village of Alvor and Ferragudo showing interest along with the Monchique area.
Further west, Lagos offers a more traditional Portugal and the beach at Praia de Dona Ana is stunning.
As we head further west from Lagos we hit the lovely town of Burgau. From here, prices are more affordable, there is less development and the scenery is more wild, windswept and exposed to the Atlantic. Sagres is a small harbour town boasting some of the regions best scuba diving and surfing.
Lisbon is undergoing a major redevelopment program attracting many high net worth property investors. Key areas of interest in the centre are Chiado, Bairro Alto, Principe Real, Avenida Liberdade and Baixia. In the outskirts Cascais, Estoril and Sintra are popular.
On the south side of the Rio Tajo lies the Setubal municipality which includes the family favourite Troiaresort. Sesimbra is also popular.
The Silver Coast, Costa de Prata, runs for about 100 miles north of Lisbon. This area has been growing in popularity due to the relaxed, unspoilt and open coastline. Prices are also much more affordable as compared to the Algarve. There are glorious beaches and miles of undulating countryside. Historical towns and villages dot the coast where you can enjoy authentic Portuguese culture and gastronomy. Nazaré is the favoured destination, Peniche is very traditional whilst the modern resorts at Praia D’el Ray and Campo Real are family favourites.
In the North, we have the vibrant city of Porto which lies on the bank of the River Douro home to some of Portugal’s best wines. The coast near Porto is called the Green Coast and boasts several unspoilt beautiful beaches. Popular destinations include Amarante, Guimaraes, Braga, Viana do Castelo, Ponte de Lima, Caminha, Vila Nova De Cerveira and Valença.
Madeira, is served by the recently renamed Christiano Ronaldo Airport (a native of the island) at Santa Cruz. Like the Canary Islands, Madeira enjoys a sub-tropical climate and good moderate year-round temperatures. Due to the climate, the island is popular with retirees and those that love outdoor sports and water activities. Popular options are around Funchal. Madeira’s smaller neighbour, Porto Santa is less developed and more affordable but has the best beaches.
